Dear Parents,
Welcome to St. Cecilia Catholic School. Our Catholic school is a community of people working together to foster the full development of young people in a truly Christian environment.
We are grateful to be partners in the Catholic education of your children. Please take time to read this handbook carefully so that you are aware of the philosophy and policies of the school. By working together, we will make this school year successful and Christ-filled for all of our students.

In Christ,
The faculty and staff of St. Cecilia

    Honor Roll
Kindergarten,1st, and 2nd grade students are given special recognition by the classroom teachers throughout the school year. Third grade through eighth grade students are quarterly recognized for academic achievement.
Principal Honors: A's in all academic subjects
    2nd Honors: A's &/or B's in all academic subjects
3rd Honors: A's &/or B's with no more than one C in all academic subjects

    Homework
Students in every grade have homework. Primary level students have small amounts, which often require adult assistance. As students grow older, the amount of homework gradually increases. Students are expected to do their homework independently for the most part by third grade, unless the homework involves the family.
The purpose of homework is to give students additional practice on basic skills, develop self-discipline, establish a habit of independent reading and thinking, and strengthen the bond between home and school. Each teacher will communicate to parents early in the year regarding homework expectations.
In general, students should average about 10 minutes times the grade level of homework per night (ie. 4th grade about 40 min., 2nd about 20 min.) If your student consistently spends more time per night, please contact the teacher.

    Human Sexuality Program
St. Cecilia uses the Project Genesis Program for K-8 students.
The Diocese of Wichita has implemented the VIRTUS Protecting God's Children for the current school year. All Administrators, teachers, and volunteers that work with children will be required to attend this 3-hour training. If you would like to volunteer, and have not received training, check the Catholic Advance or call the school office.

    Library
Library books may be taken home. Books are checked out to the students for two weeks for Grades 4-8, and one week for students in Kindergarten - Grade 3. Overdue books are fined $0.25 each school day. Weekends or vacation will not be counted. Lost or damaged books will be charged the cost to replace the book.
Overdue reminder notes are sent home weekly for Grades K-1. Notes are sent to all students with overdue books or fines pending at the time of each quarter.

    Band
A Band class is held at Freeman Elementary for students in Grade 5. Students wishing to participate in band will need to provide their own instrument and will miss approximately 40 minutes of class time each day to attend band. Additional information will be sent home the first week of school.
The band teacher at Bishop Carroll High School, Mrs. Crystal Cutter, also teaches "The Combined Saints Band" at BCHS after school for elementary schools that do not have a band program of their own. Mrs. Cutter will distribute information at the beginning of the year.

    Damage to School Property
Students are responsible for all books and supplies issued to them. If school materials or school property become lost or damaged, the student is required to pay for the repair or replacement of the item(s).

    Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences are held twice a year, at the end of the first and third quarters. For each conference, parents will be expected to sign-up for a time to meet with the teacher. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers whenever they have questions about their child's progress, relationships, or behavior at school.

    Promotion to Next Grade
Promotion to next grade is based on satisfactory achievement, maturity and attendance.

    Retention
The following steps are taken when a student is being considered for retention:

    1. By December, the classroom teacher discusses the possible retention with the principal.
    2. Possibility of retention is brought to the parents' attention by the end of February.
    3. The classroom teacher documents remedial efforts. Special education services may be considered through the public school.
    4. The parents are involved in the final decision. No retention is carried out without careful consideration and communication with parents.
    5. If a student is advanced against the advice of the professional staff, parents are required to sign a statement that they realize the advancement is against the advice of the staff.

    Special Education Services
USD 261 provides special education services in our building each day for students that qualify. Speech, OT/PT, Gifted and Learning Disabled students receive services according to their Individual Education Plan. Teachers work with special education professionals to ensure each student's progress.
Title I services are provided to those who qualify in grades K-4.

    Summer School/Retention
Students that score basic or unsatisfactory on the KS Assessment or I.T.B.S. Tests will be required to attend Summer School. In addition, students who fail a semester in any given subject must make up the work in summer school. If a student fails several subjects he/she will be considered for retention at that grade.

    Testing Program
The Diocese of Wichita and St. Cecilia are continually looking to update the method of assessing student achievement. Students in grades 3-8 will participate in the computerized MAP assessments. Kansas Assessment Tests are also administered to 3rd – 8th graders . All students in grade 2 take a Reading Diagnostic Test within the first nine weeks of the school year, Kindergartners and 1st graders take a Reading Diagnostic test during the last 9 weeks of school.

    Admission
In accordance with Kansas State Law, children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before the first day of September of the school year. Certificates of birth, physical, and immunization must be provided at the time of registration.
Children entering St. Cecilia Catholic School for the first time will present their report card from the preceding term of the former school. A screening will take place before acceptance into the school. A certificate of Baptism, First Communion, etc. will be required for all sacraments not received at St. Cecilia Church.

    Attendance
The school day begins at 7:50 a.m. Teachers are present in the school from 7:20 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. Children should not arrive before 7:30 a.m., for there will be no supervision. School is officially dismissed at 3:15 p.m., (bus riders at 3:12 p.m.). Parents are to make arrangements for children to be dropped off on time and picked-up PROMPTLY at dismissal.

Excessive tardiness will result in a student serving detention time.
Our Kindergarten class will be an all day session.
    Preschool will be held from 7:50 - 11:00 and from 12:00 – 3:10

    Absence
Regular school attendance is essential for student growth and progress. There is a high correlation between successful academic achievement and faithful attendance. Illness will be the main reason why a student does not attend classes, that is understood and is excused. Funerals and medical appointments (doctor; dentist) will be counted as approved absences.

    1. Parents are responsible for notifying the school office before 8:00 a.m. if their child will be absent or late due to an appointment.
If due to appointment, parent must accompany the student to the office to sign the child in.
    2. A student is counted absent if not participating in classroom activities during school hours. If gone 1.5-3.5 hours, it is counted as a half-day absence. Three and one half or more hours is counted as a whole day absent.
    3. Excused absences are when a student is unable to attend class due to illness, death in the family, or other unavoidable situations.
    4. Unexcused absences include trips or vacations. Missing school for family trips is discouraged. It is impossible to fully recover the work missed when absent. Although absences for this reason are not in the best interest of the student, notification will prevent the absence from being considered truancy. A written note from parents should be sent one week in advance if a trip is anticipated. Please do not expect work in advance for students who are traveling. If the work is given in advance, it is due the day the student returns to class.

    Truancy
In accordance with state law 72-1113, a student is considered truant if the child has unexcused absences either 3 consecutive days or more than 5 days in any semester and 7 days in a school year. If truancy occurs parents are contacted. If the situation is not resolved, the State Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS ) is notified.

    Make-up Work

    1. Students who have been absent for any reason are required to make up the work missed in regular instruction. Students are responsible to take the initiative to obtain the work, complete it, and return it promptly.
    2. One day for each day absent is allowed for completion and return of make-up work, unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher. Under normal circumstances, when an absence exceeds five days, the student will be required to have all make-up work completed by the fifth day back. A student will be expected to take any pre-announced test on the day of his/her return unless excused by the teacher.
    3. Make-up work cannot completely satisfy a day missed. The oral work and the cooperative learning are not recoverable. When a student is absent, a drop in grades may occur.
    4. Parents and students should not expect to receive make-up work in advance of the absence. If the work is given in advance, it is due the day the student returns to class unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher.

    Release During the School Day
Appointments should be scheduled outside the school day whenever possible. If this cannot be done, a note is to be sent informing the teacher of an upcoming appointment.
When picking up a child for an appointment, parents must come to the office and the child will be dismissed from the classroom. Any time missed over 1.5 hours (and less than 3.5 hours) is considered a half-day absence. Upon returning to school the parent needs to sign the student back in at the office.

    Tardiness
Parents are responsible for notifying the school office if a child is going to be tardy. Tardiness is counted for time up to 1.5 hours, starting at 7:50 a.m. when the bell rings. After 1.5 hours, it is considered an absence.
Repeated tardiness seriously interferes with the class and teacher, eventually resulting in student detention time and/or a truancy violation.
Students will be assigned a one-half (1/2) hour detention for every 5 tardies accumulated in one quarter.
Parents of students in grades K-8 are contacted via letter after the fifth tardy in a quarter.

    Child Abuse Reporting
Under the "Kansas Code for Care of Children," all professional staff (including priests, principals, teachers, and other employees of a school) who have reason to suspect that a child has been injured as a result of physical, mental or emotional abuse, are required to report such abuse to the State Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS). Parents, teachers and other adults who work with students (coaches, volunteers, room mothers, high school students etc.) must read and complete a Diocese of Wichita Abuse Policy/Form and attend the VIRTUS Training.

    School Communication
When a parent has a concern about a teacher, it should be discussed with the teacher first. A parent should not by-pass a teacher and go directly to the principal under normal circumstances. If the concern is not resolved having conversed with the teacher, the parent, teacher, and principal will meet together. Parents may contact a teacher for an appointment by phone, note, e-mail or by leaving a message in the office. Individual teachers will inform their parents if they wish to be contacted at home.
When a teacher has a concern about a student (academics or behavior), the parent will be notified by phone or with a note that is to be signed by a parent and returned the next day.
Discussion of school concerns should be done outside of instructional hours so that teachers can give their full attention to teaching and supervision. For this reason, parents are asked not to go to classrooms during school hours to discuss a concern unless an appointment has been made. Parents may call or visit the school office to make an appointment to visit with the principal. It is most helpful to plan appointments at least one day in advance.

    "Carrier" Student
Many school-wide communications are sent home during the school year. You will be able to appoint the carrier child for your family. This student has the responsibility of giving all school communications to his/her parents promptly. Normally, notes from the school office will be sent home with "carrier" students only.

    Items that Parents Deliver/Pickup
Please do not take items directly to classrooms. Items that children forget and that parents bring to school should be marked with the child's name and left at the office for delivery.
Classrooms are locked when teachers leave for the day. Unless the teacher is present, we do not allow doors to be unlocked for students to retrieve books or other forgotten items.
When the facility is being used for meetings/activities after school hours, children are to remain with their parent(s) or adult sponsor(s). For safety reasons, children should not be allowed to roam the building.

    Bookbags
Due to the limited classroom space and the hazard that the bookbags with wheels present, bookbags with wheels will not be allowed. Please purchase bookbags that are traditional in style and without wheels.

    School Newsletter
The Crusader Connection, our school newsletter is sent home every other Friday. Watch the Crusader Connection for the monthly calendar of events, helpful hints and important information.

    Notes Sent Home
All notes, flyers, and other information to be sent home with students must be O-Ked by the principal at least two days prior to being sent out.
    Sending money to school
Money sent to school for field trips, pictures, etc. (anything other than for the lunch program) should be sent with each student and not as a family. Cash or checks must be for the exact amount. All money (cash or checks) should be sent in a sealed envelope marked with: the child's name, grade, teacher, and what the money is for.

    Non-Custodial Parents Rights
In the absence of a court order to the contrary, non-custodial parents have the right to see academic records and other school-related information. If there is a court order specifying there is to be no information given, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the school with an official copy of the court order.

    Correspondence for Non-Custodial Parents
By providing the school office with self-addressed stamped envelopes, non-custodial parents may receive copies of all-important communication that is sent home with the students, including copies of the child's report cards and mid-term progress reports.

    Discipline

    Bully Proof School
In the Spirit of Reconciliation, our school discipline plan includes a way for students to respond to bullying. Our intent is to enforce a Christian atmosphere in which children do not hurt one another through bullying. Diocesan Policy 418, signed by Bishop Olmsted in October 2000 will be enforced. It reads:

“In Catholic schools, the faith community of students and adults should respect, protect, and share the God-given life and worth and dignity of every person, regardless of ability, gender, appearance, cultural background, or interests. More particularly, the Diocese, through its administrators, faculty, and staff, in effecting an environment that encourages and supports learning, expresses a heightened concern for the student who may be isolated, bullied, harassed, alienated, or the target of inappropriate conduct. Such behaviors can include, but are not limited to teasing, poking, biting, and hitting or extorting money, food, favors, or other possessions from another person, whether it is persistent behavior or a single egregious act. Further, such behaviors can range from mild to severe and include physical, verbal, written, or graphic aggression as well as social isolation and alienation. It includes, but is not limited to epithets, slurs, stereotyping, name-calling, sexually suggestive, insensitive, or vulgar comments, as well as written or graphic material that is circulated within the school or placed on walls, bulletin boards, or elsewhere for public display. The conduct targeted under this policy need not occur in the school environment, on its premises, or at a school-sponsored event to come within the jurisdiction of the Diocese, if it is deemed to effect any one of the three conditions noted and articulated herein.
Behavior that targets an individual or group (or their relatives, friends, or associates) is harassment when it:

    1. has the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating, hostile, abusive, or offensive environment;
    2. has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s performance;
    3. adverse affects an individual’s opportunities. (It is not necessary to prove that the victim was psychologically harmed or that the conduct was intentional.)

The behaviors targeted here, including bullying and harassment, are forms of violence that are not acceptable in and cannot be tolerated in Catholic schools as normal behavior or normal human development. At a minimum, they constitute bad manners and bad example. They may also be both immoral and illegal as well. Each school shall include in its guidance program education about bullying, harassment, and the consequences of such behavior. Students who are determined to have engaged in the various forms of conduct referenced here will be subject to progressive discipline, from mandatory counseling and suspension from participation in school-related activities and privileges, to disciplinary sanctions, up to and including expulsion.
If a child is bothered by another child, he or she should talk with the student, a teacher or give a note to the teacher. As soon as possible, the teacher will follow up on the report and take action as needed.

    In-School Suspension (ISS)
ISS is served in isolation from peers. The student is given all the class work for the day and is expected to have a book to read once the work is completed. Interaction with other students in not permitted. Partial credit will be given to work completed.
Parents are informed of an in-school suspension by a notice from the teacher that is sent home with the student. It includes the time that the suspension is to be served. The notice is to be signed and returned the next day.

    Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)
In the event that a student is suspended out-of-school, the principal will notify the parents. Although assignments are required to be completed, no credit will be awarded.

    Expulsion
A student may be expelled from school if all other means of discipline have failed, or for involvement in a single act that presents a serious threat to the school community.

    Violence Prevention Policy
Any student found to bring any life-threatening weapon, (such as guns, knives, illegal substances) to school may face immediate expulsion.

    Cheating
Cheating is defined as dishonestly earning credit for work that was completed with the use of notes, open books, copying work from neighboring students, copying information from the Internet or reference books without citing the source, or requesting other students to complete work for credit given to another student. Cheating will not be tolerated. Students found to be cheating will receive a zero grade on that assignment. In subsequent instances, the student may be suspended for up to three days. Re-entry into the school will be the decision of the principal.

    Professional Counseling
In some cases, the principal may require that in order to remain in school, a student receive professional counseling outside the school setting to address the issue at hand.
The guiding principle in our discipline procedures is the desire to act in a Christian manner, characterized by fairness and compassion. If a student is disciplined, he/she is told what was wrong and is given a chance to be heard.
The final recourse in all disciplinary situations is the school administrator.

    Computer Use: Internet
While using the Internet at school, adult supervision will be provided and required. Students and parents must sign a Computer Use Agreement every year.
Acceptable Use: Access to the Internet and use of the computer must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational and religious objectives of St. Cecilia Catholic School.
Privileges: The use of the computer is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in cancellation of that privilege. The classroom teacher will deem what is inappropriate use and his/her decision is final. The pastor, administration, faculty, and/or staff of St. Cecilia Catholic School may request the teacher to deny users access to the Internet or computer. Denial of privileges will not relieve the student of his/her responsibility for completing the assigned work and/or project.
Network Etiquette: All computer users are responsible for abiding by the general accepted rules of network etiquette. These rules include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Use appropriate language
    • Do not reveal your (or another person) personal address or phone number
    • Obey all copyright laws
    • Do not trespass in another individual’s personal file
    • Do not use another user’s password
    • Access web sites that are appropriate and part of an assigned lesson
    • Properly care for and maintain computer hardware and software
    • Do not attempt to enter chat rooms or any e-mail address and/or mailbox

Any violation of these policies or any other inappropriate use of the computer may result in the following:
    • Loss of access to computers at St. Cecilia Catholic School
    • Disciplinary action, to be determined by the administration of St. Cecilia Catholic School
    • Legal action, if appropriate

Due to the nature of the World Wide Web, St. Cecilia Catholic School cannot warranty and/or guarantee the accuracy, quality, morality and/or appropriateness of information or material obtained through its services. As such, use of or exposure to any material obtained via the schools Internet services shall not have an expectation of privacy and/or confidentiality. In addition, St. Cecilia Catholic School reserves the right to monitor computer use and each user should assume that said user’s computer activities are being monitored during use of the computer or that his/her personal file will be accessed and audited from time to time.

    Dress Code
It is the parents' responsibility to dress their children in the prescribed dress code. The dress code provides parameters to help avoid distractions in the learning process as well as providing a greater measure of safety for the students.
All students' clothing should be neat, clean, pressed, and mended as necessary. Please mark all uniforms and other significant articles of clothing with the student's name. The final decision on the appropriateness of the school dress and/or grooming lies with the principal.

    Boys - Grades K-8
SHIRTS: Boys in grades K-8 will wear either a, gray, or blue polo shirt with the St. Cecilia School logo. These shirts must be purchased through St. Cecilia School. All shirts are to be tucked in completely at all times.

HAIR: must be traditional and groomed off the eyebrows and be cut above the bottom of the collar. No outlandish cuts will be permitted – this includes, but is not limited to tails, designs shaved into the hair, and unnatural colors. Boys must be cleanly shaven at all times.

    Girls - Grades K-8
JUMPERS: Girls in grades K-8 will wear the Parker Uniform pattern only (blue/gray/ black plaid) with the gray or blue St. Cecilia polo shirt. Jumper and skirt length is to be no shorter than the top of the knee. Beginning in 6th grade, girls may wear the uniform skirt without the bib bodice. Skirts can either be separated from an existing jumper or purchased with sewn down pleats from Parker Uniform.

GIRLS' MODESTY SHORTS: Shorts must be worn at all times under the jumper. Stretch bike shorts in solid black, white or navy are recommended. Solid navy or white tights may be worn for warmth. Girls are not allowed to wear sweats, sports pants, or any other pants underneath their jumpers.

Girls take off their skirt or jumper for PE class and therefore shorts must be worn under the uniform. Shorts are to be modest, must be hemmed, and no shorter than the tip of the fingertips. Boxer shorts are not considered appropriate shorts.

SHIRTS: Girls' Polo knit shirts are to be gray or blue with collars. They must not have any lace, ruffles, or emblem other than St. Cecilia's School logo. All uniform shirts will be either gray or blue with the St. Cecilia School logo purchased through St. Cecilia School. All shirts are to be tucked in completely at all times.

    Both Boys and Girls
PANTS: Must be navy blue, plain or pleated uniform type. Uniform type is defined as inside pocket both front and back with zipper (no outside stitched pockets or rivets). Uniform pants must be straight leg. St. Cecilia recommends Sears, J.C. Penney, and Parker Uniform for purchase.

SHORTS: Must be navy blue uniform type shorts with zipper and pockets. Shorts must be of appropriate fit and no shorter than the tip of the fingertips. Shorts may be worn during the months of August, September, April and May.

ACCESSORIES: Girls may wear small post earrings. Earrings hanging below the earlobe or multiple earrings in one ear are not permitted. Boys may not wear earrings. Hair accessories in white, navy, black and gray are acceptable. Bracelets, necklaces, and rings are not allowed. Religious chained medals or scapulars are allowed, but must be worn underneath the uniform. Wristwatches may be worn. For safety reasons, watches and religious medals may need to be removed during P.E. classes.

BELTS: Must be worn with pants that are designed with belt-loops for students in grades K-8. If a student comes to school without a belt, he or she can rent one from the principal for $1.00 per day.

MAKE-UP: No Make-up of any kind, including nail polish is permitted.

SCOUT UNIFORM: Complete formal dress scout uniforms may be worn on meeting day (no jeans).

SOCKS: Solid white or navy crew socks may be worn. Socks MUST show at least 2 inches above the back of the shoe. Solid white or navy tights may be worn with the girls' uniform.

SHOES: Shoes must be athletic in style with the predominate color of white, black, navy or dark brown. No sandals, heels, platform/wedges, open toe or open back shoes of any kind are allowed.

SWEATSHIRTS: The gray St. Cecilia sweatshirts with the St. Cecilia School logo will be part of the official dress code. Sweatshirts can be ordered through St. Cecilia School. All previous gray St. Cecilia sweatshirts will remain appropriate uniform attire until they are outgrown or worn out.

Students must remove non-uniform sweaters or coats once in the classroom – this includes all non-uniform St. Cecilia sweatshirts and hoodies.

    Spirit Day - Dress Code
The last Friday of each month is "Spirit Day." On these days, students may wear jeans and any St. Cecilia Crusader shirt. This would include the Spirit T-shirt, Battle of the Books shirt, and T-shirt's or sweatshirts sold by the Home and School Association. The shirts will be sold through the school office at the beginning of each school year. In addition to Spirit Days, the spirit shirts will also be worn on field trips and other special occasions. On Spirit days all other dress code (belts, tucked in shirts, and shoes) will be enforced.

    Special Days - Dress Code
Occasional free dress days will be scheduled. On free dress days, students are allowed to wear nice, properly fitting jeans with appropriate shirts, sweatshirts, or T-shirts. Clothing worn on free dress days must be in good repair and good taste. Shorts may be worn in August, September, April and May only. Athletic style shoes are still required.

If children come to school on free dress days, dressed inappropriately, parents will be called to bring a school uniform to school and the student will not be able to participate in upcoming free dress days. A general rule of thumb is, "when in doubt of the appropriateness of some piece of clothing, don't wear it".
Free dress refers to clothing only. All other policies for dress, such as no jewelry or make-up are enforced.
The principal reserves the right to decide what is appropriate with student dress.
Consequences enforced for students who are out of uniform:

    1. Nonessentials will be removed (sweatshirts, sweaters, jewelry, hair accessories, etc).
    2. Students will bring home a note if essentials of the uniform are not present. ($1.00 fine for missing belts, inappropriate socks, etc).
    3. Parents will be called and asked to bring the uniform to school.
    4. Students may not be able to participate in upcoming free dress days.

    Birthday
Students are allowed to have a free dress day on their birthday if they wish (see Special Days - Dress Code).
If a child's birthday falls during the summer months, he or she may choose another day for free dress.

    Purchasing Uniforms
Plaid jumpers and uniform pants can be purchased at Parker School Uniform, 650 N. Carriage Parkway, Suite 145, phone 687-4634. They can also be ordered online at www.parkeru.com.

    Field Trips
Classes go on several field trips each year to complement the academic program. A permission form for each trip will be sent home to be signed and returned to school.
Field trips are a privilege. Students may be denied participation if they fail to meet academic or behavioral requirements as set by the teacher or principal.
During field trips, students are expected to respond immediately to directions from their teachers and adults. Polite and respectful behavior is expected.

    Guidelines for Field Trip Drivers

    1. There is one seat belt per child. No one under the age of 12 is permitted to sit in the front seat in a vehicle with front air bags.
    2. Students must follow the directions of driver and use good manners.
    3. Students are assigned vehicles & drivers for going both to and from. The driver will be given a list of assigned students.
    4. Each vehicle proceeds directly to the site of the field trip and returns directly to school.
    5. Drivers are contacted in advance of the field trip.
    6. All drivers will receive a map giving directions to the location and will follow each other in a caravan style.
    7. Drivers are required to fill out a Field Trip Waiver Form, which includes driver’s license number and insurance policy number. Drivers for field trips are also required to read and complete a Diocese of Wichita Abuse Policy Form and attend VIRTUS training.

    School Closing
St. Cecilia's policy is to dismiss school for inclement weather when the Haysville Public Schools, USD 261 dismisses. The announcement will be made via the three local TV stations and the following radio stations: KFDI (AM 1070 or FM 101), KZSN (FM 102.1), and KKRD (FM 107.3).

    Health and Safety

    Health Information
The health room is not staffed by a registered nurse; therefore, the teachers, principal, or school secretary will administer temporary care or first aid.
It is the parents’ responsibility to keep children who are obviously ill at home. Illnesses are considered most contagious at the beginning. Children with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea should not be sent to school.
Students being sent home due to illness or injury are dismissed from the health room to the parent or designated adult. Students who have been ill should remain at home for at least 24 hours after their temperature and sickness have returned to normal.

    Immunization
All students must have current immunization and have on file a current KCI form. Non-compliance with immunization guidelines will result in exclusion from classes.
As per the directions of the Bishop of Wichita and the superintendent of the Diocese of Wichita, St. Cecilia will no longer allow students to enroll who are not fully immunized or who do not have a medical exemption.
A new KCI form must be submitted yearly for those students being medically exempt from certain immunizations.

    Medication
A written note signed by a doctor or dentist requesting that medication be given during school hours must accompany all medications and include the following: name of student, name of medication, reason for medication, dosage amount and time to be given, and anticipated number of days medication will be taken at school. A written request for medication to be given at school, signed by the parent, must accompany all medication. The medication must come in an official prescription container or the original over the counter packaging. It is the parent’s responsibility to supply the medication and assure that the medication is the same as identified on the label. The above policy applies to all medication, including aspirin and Tylenol.
Cough drops may be kept with the student and need not be turned in to the office. A note should be written to the teacher when cough drops are sent to school.
Students are responsible for remembering to take their medication.
A parent or physician signed note must be sent to school when a child is to sit out of PE class or recess.

    Physical Examinations
All children entering Kindergarten and students not previously enrolled in a Kansas School are required to have a physical before entering school. Documentation of the physical will be kept in the child's health records.

    Pregnancy Policy
Per Diocesan Policy #413, "Any student pregnancy requires a careful analysis of a student's status and presents the possibility of unique circumstances which require specific interpretation and application. The administrators of the local schools have the responsibly for making such interpretation and decision."

    Screening
Hearing, vision and dental screening will be provided for each student.

    Communicable Disease Regulations
In accordance with the Wichita-Sedgwick County Health Department, any child who has any of the following diseases shall be excluded from school and contact with other children until written release is obtained from the Wichita-Sedgwick County Health Department, or attending physician:

A child may be excluded for an additional period of time if the principal or other school personnel feel it is necessary for the protection of the child and/or others.

The parents are requested to notify the school office of any communicable disease so appropriate precautions may be instituted.

    Safety drills
Fire drills are held monthly. At the sound of the fire bell, students and teachers move quickly and quietly to their designated exit and assigned outside area. A diagram by each classroom door shows the designated exit routes.
Tornado drills are held at least three times each school year. At the sound of the tornado bell, students and teacher move quickly and quietly to the designated area in the Middle School. Students face the wall and sit with hands over heads until the "All clear" signal is issued.

    Liturgies
On Mondays, Grades 1-8 participate in Morning Prayer or the recitation of the Rosary. School-wide Masses are scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays. Kindergarten attends on Wednesday and Friday only. The Mass is planned so that the students have the opportunity to actively participate.

First Friday devotions are recited after mass for an increase of vocations.
Benediction is held on the First Friday of each month at 3:00PM.

    Lunch and Milk Program

    Kdg-8th Grade Lunch
Food service accounts are set-up for each family, not each child. Full priced lunches are $1.75 for K-8 student, $1.50 for pre-school children and $2.60 for adult lunches. Extra milk are .30. – Depending upon state requirements and factors in production, prices are subject to change.
When the account reaches a balance of $5.00 or less, parents receive notification. Payment with one check per family is to be sent in the envelope attached to the notice. The day that each deposit is made a receipt will be sent home to verify the office received the payment. In order to provide funds for the lunch program, we ask that a payment be made at registration or before the first day of school.
If your family account reaches a negative balance, your child will not be able to purchase the meal from the menu. Instead a peanut butter sandwich and milk will be provided at the cost of $1.00.
Provisions are made for free or reduced price lunches for families who meet federal specifications. At year's end, any money left in a family's account will be carried over to the following year.
If the family financial situation, that may affect a student’s free or reduced lunch status, changes during the year, parents may request a free and reduced lunch application from the school office.

Food Allergies or Other Health Issues
Children who are to be excused from particular foods because of allergies or other health reasons are required to have a written, dated statement from their doctor to be on file at school. Changes or substitutions will not be made without a doctor's statement, which needs to be updated annually.

    Sack lunches
Those who do not participate in the hot lunch program bring sack lunches and may purchase milk. Students who bring sack lunches should pack their own plastic utensils. Please keep in mind that students do not have access to a microwave. Per state policy, no pop is allowed in the cafeteria.

    Parents at lunch
We welcome parents to come to lunch. If you desire to eat a hot lunch, notification must be made to the school office by 9:00 a.m. Parents do not pay separately, rather their meal is charged to the family's food service account.
Parents are asked not to bring fast food (or food from outside restaurants) for themselves or their child when they come to school for lunch. Parents are strongly discouraged from taking their child out of the building for lunch.

    Mission Money
Our school will participate in several community service projects throughout the school year. As part of our school outreach program, students are asked to participate in these activities by donating their time, talent, and/or treasure to these worthwhile causes. In past years, St. Cecilia students have helped the following charitable organizations: the Holy Childhood Association, the Lord's Diner, disaster relief agencies, Haysville community outreach, Birthline, and the Anthony Family Shelter.

    Student Athletics & Eligibility
Upon Diocesan approval and with adequate interest, St. Cecilia Catholic School will field its own athletic teams. If we are not able to fill our own teams, students are invited to participate in the athletic program at other Catholic Schools in the diocese. Our students are expected to follow the rules of the CSAL and abide by each school's policy. St. Anne, St. Margaret Mary, St. Joseph, St. Peter and St. Mary’s Derby have athletic programs and have worked with St. Cecilia in the past. If St. Cecilia is unable to field a team, the athletic director will assign interested students to a particular school.
All students must meet Diocesan and school guidelines at all times to remain eligible for a sport or activity.

    Special Occasions
All Saint's Day celebration is scheduled for the end of the school day. The party is planned and conducted by the room mothers.
Valentines Day: A school wide Valentine's Day party is also planned and conducted by the room mothers at the end of the school day.
Birthday Celebrations: Many parents send treats on their child's birthday. The treats are passed out at the end of the day. The treats should be individual items such as cookies or cupcakes. No drinks or cakes, please. If you are planning on sending birthday treats to school, please check with your child’s teacher beforehand to see if there are any students with food allergies in the classroom.
We recognize June birthdays in January, July birthdays in February, and August birthdays (up to school beginning) in March. Treats that are brought to the school are to be delivered to the office.
Invitations to personal parties may NOT be distributed at school. All invitations should be sent through the mail.
We strongly encourage parents not to send gifts to school for their children such as flower or balloon arrangements.
There is a birthday bulletin board kept in the hallway. Morning announcements include the birthdays for the day. These students receive a special ribbon and a certificate.

    Baptism Day
Each student’s Baptism Date can be found on a monthly hall bulletin board. Names are announced daily over the intercom and students receive a St. Cecilia bookmark.

    Recycling"Can It" Days
Two days each month are designated as "Can It" days. On these days, families of the school and parish are encouraged to drop off their empty, rinsed, smashed and bagged soda cans. With the help of parent coordinators, the collection is taken to a recycling center in exchange for cash that is then returned to the school program.

    Labels and Cartridges
Campbell Soup labels and Tyson box labels as well as Box Tops for Education are collected. Families may send these items in throughout the school year. We are able to purchase classroom equipment and receive cash with the labels and box tops.
Through our participation with Cartridge Recycling of America, we collect used printer cartridges, and cell phones. We then exchange these for cash.

    Student Ambassadors
Students in the 7th and 8th grades may apply for select positions to represent our school as Ambassadors. These students help at various parish events and head a variety of service projects throughout the school year. They work to enhance school spirit and develop a positive identity in the community.

    Substance Abuse
In accordance with our Catholic mission of reverence for life, prevention of substance abuse is part of the curriculum in every grade. Intervention goes into effect when there is indication that a student may be involved in or under the influence of an illegal substance. The student is required to have an evaluation by a licensed substance abuse counselor. The student is not allowed to attend classes until the evaluation has been completed and the counselor, student, and parent have spoken to the principal.

    Volunteers
There are numerous ways to volunteer and numerous needs for assistance. A volunteer form is given out at registration. This form provides information about the many areas for volunteering. All volunteers are required to read and complete a Diocese of Wichita Abuse Policy Form or complete the VIRTUS training.
While we truly appreciate the time and effort parents give to volunteering, school staff cannot monitor students after school hours. During volunteer hours outside of the school day parents are responsible for and expected to keep their children with them at all times.

    Treasury of Prayers

    Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

    The Lord’s Prayer “ Our Father “
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

    Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed are Thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of death. Amen.

    Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Angel of God “Prayer to Guardian Angel”
Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here: ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, to guide. Amen.

    Grace Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord. Amen

    Grace After Meals
We give Thee thanks, Almighty God, for all Thy benefits, which we have received from thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Act of Contrition
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong, and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

    The Morning Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart; the salvation of souls, the reparation for sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops, and all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael, the Archangel
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, prince of heavenly hosts, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

    Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

    Nicene Creed
We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, Begotten, not made, one in being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. By the power of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in fulfullment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one, Holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    Good Morning God
Good Morning God and thank You for the glory of the sun. Thank you for the health I have to get my duty done. I shall devote the hours of this golden day to You by honoring Your Holy Name in all I say and do. I know there have been many days that I have whiled away. But this is one that I should like to make your special day. So once more, good-morning God, and please depend on me because I want to honor You for all eternity. Amen.

    Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change…Courage to change the things I can…and wisdom to know the difference.

    Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your spirit and we shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray, O God, You instructed the hearts of your faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit. Grant us in the same spirit to be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord Amen

    Prayer for the Dead
Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let Thy perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

    Angelus
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
    Hail Mary ...
Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to Your word.
    Hail Mary ...
And the word was made flesh. And dwelt among us.
    Hail Mary ...
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
    Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord, Your grace into our hearts that we to whom the incarnation of Christ, Your Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His passion and cross be brought to the glory of His resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from the side of Christ, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O Good Jesus, hear me; Within your wounds hide me; Separated from you, let me never be; From the evil one, protect me; At the hour of my death, call me; And close to you bid me; That with your saints I may be praising you forever and ever. Amen.

    Act of Love
Oh my God, I love You above all things with my whole heart, and soul, because You are all-good and worthy of all my love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of You. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.

    Act of Hope
Oh My God, relying on Your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Your grace and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

    Act of Faith
Oh My God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that Your divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all truths which the Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen

    The Magnificat
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
    and holy is His name.

He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of His arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of His servant Israel
for He has remembered His promise of mercy,
the promise He made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever. Amen.

    The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit; the reign of
    God is theirs.
Blessed are the sorrowing; they shall be
    consoled.
Blessed are the lowly; they shall inherit the l
    land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
    holiness: they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are they who show mercy; mercy
    shall be theirs.
Blessed are the pure of heart; they shall see
    God.
Blessed are the peace-makers: they shall

sake; the reign of God is theirs.
